Abandoned bags can ring all sorts of alarms if they’re found at major transportation hubs like airports or train stations. But, when Gabriel Ruiz and Gabriela Jauregui came across a diaper bag that had been mysteriously left behind while viewing Christmas lights in their neighborhood, it looked totally harmless. Curiosity got the better of them, and they thought it couldn’t hurt to take one teeny little peek inside.
However, after they saw its surprising contents, the couple discreetly looked around them before snatching the bag and taking it home. Most people wouldn’t normally consider themselves lucky if they ever found someone else’s lost diaper bag, but in this case, there was more than just a stack of baby wipes tucked inside.
The twenty-four-year-old couple had actually been doing something innocent the night they discovered the lost diaper bag. Gabriel and Gabriela were enjoying a sparkling Christmas lights display in the Naples neighborhood of Long Beach, California when they decided to stop and take a photo of the beautiful scene.
That’s when the couple noticed a lone backpack sitting on a seat. When no one came around to claim it, Gabriel and Gabriela decided to look inside to see if they could find some sort of ID to track down its rightful owner. But, upon closer inspection it appeared that this backpack was actually a makeshift diaper bag, and carrying baby swag wasn’t its only function.
Its contents left Gabriel and Gabriela concerned and worried, to the point that they stayed up all night trying to figure out what to do with the accidental discovery. One of the bag’s compartments held a pocketbook, but this wallet was a lot thicker than most. Gabriel told CTVNews:
“We saw the wallet, opened that up, and then there was just a ton of money in there.”
That ton of money actually added up to a whopping $5K in cold hard cash, but the young couple knew that they couldn’t keep it. Unfortunately, tracking down its owner was a lot harder than they thought, since the Vietnamese passports and other documents they found had no address.
That night, the bag’s owner went back to the site where the bag had been left, and even posted signs in the hopes that an honest person would come forward and return it. The man, who was studying at southern California college and didn’t want to be identified, said:
“I thought how can I get back to my country? How can I pay my tuition? My rent? I already have a baby.”
The next morning Gabriel and Gabriela discovered a secret compartment in the bag, which thankfully held some vital contact details. After calling the number, they asked the man to describe the bag before they met with him to return it.
“Oh my God, I’m still shaking. You just saved my life. Can I have a hug please?”
Although it probably gave the poor man a fright, taking the bag home with them was probably the best thing that could have ever happened to this family! A dishonest person would have taken off with the cash, but this young couple went out of their way to make sure that the world knows that Good Samaritans still exist.
The diapers just didn’t add up inside this lost and found diaper bag!
