For 11 years, Lily only knew what it was like to live in a cage. She was given the bare minimum to survive and forced to produce more puppies constantly.
When people picture buying puppies, they just think of happy dogs in windows.
But this is just the tip of the iceberg. To produce these desirable puppies, there is a lot of suffering that other animals endure in puppy mills.
Shortly after being born, Lily (although she wouldn’t actually be given a name for many years) was selected as a breeding dog.
That meant that she would spend most of her life trapped in an uncomfortable cage. She was forced to breed with other dogs as often as was possible. And as soon as her puppies were born, they were taken away from her.
Lily’s life was extremely sad. But then one day everything changed. At 12 years of age, she was freed from her prison.
The rescuers could tell that she was desperately ill. They rushed her to the vet, where the extent of her suffering became obvious.
The rescuers could see that Lily had soars from the cage, but when the vet bathed her (possibly her first bath ever) the extent of these injuries was revealed.
After that, the vets very carefully dried Lily, trying their hardest not to open the soars or hurt the poor dog.
It was clear throughout this process that Lily was terrified. She was now in safe hands, but all that she had known up until then was cruelty.
Later, the vets discovered an ulcer on the dog’s eye and abscesses on her paws.
After being treated for these injuries, it was time for Lily to relax.
For the first time in her life, Lily was able to lie down on a comfy padded bed.
Initially, Lily didn’t know what to make of the bed. She sniffed around it suspiciously.
Then, slowly, the dog walked onto the bed and felt the softness for herself. It was unlike anything she had ever known before, and confusion was still on her face. But eventually, she settled down.
Imagine suffering so much that you didn’t know the concept of comfort!
This was too much for some of the rescuers. They had seen so many instances of dogs suffering, but seeing a dog lie on a bed for the first time ever made them burst into tears.
Lily had no idea yet, but this was just the start of a whole new chapter in her life. It’s just a shame that she had had to endure suffering for so long.
This footage has since been uploaded to YouTube. People have commented on how emotional Lily’s story is. People have been saying things like this:
Hopefully, one day, all puppy mills will be shut down and no other dogs will suffer as Lily has.
Sadly, the truth is that inhumane puppy mills are still thriving in America. Currently, there are approximately 10,000 puppy mills in the USA. Almost 200,000 dogs are suffering in these puppy mills, where they have sad lives and cruel treatment. Some, like Lily, are eventually rescued and get to know human kindness. But others never get freed.
